Fridays, what is it about .. scrap that.. replace with any working day of the week. Main DC took itself offline first thing this morning and refused to give up the permission sets to the secondary unit because it wasn't totally offline (just enough to refuse to allow console connection, netlogon script running and therefore drive mapping and printer mapping for the whole network grid). After a couple of hours of it mashing around trying to log me in at the console, me trying to force DCPromo on the secondary unit and it subsequently telling me where to go forth and replicate with myself I finally managed to get in and start unpicking what's going on. The file server then reckons it's lost the ability to communicate with the DC (find out the member server account is disabled for it!?) and that the secondary DC is having issues resolving DNS (er, hang on - you ARE a DNS server. Oh strewth!)
So that was a fun day. Managed to bring it back online after only two and a half hours of tomfoolery and re-reading of documentation and next week will be trying to fix and cure any resident problems (not least of which the 2 second delayed write times to my SAN on the servers when they first boot up - which is really weird and annoying).
Weekend is here, made it through another week and it's been one of external consultants laughing at the creaky 10-year old network cabling and people panicking the network will detonate before we have chance to fix it.
How ironic.
So.. yeah. Weekend is here... time for fixing my own home network. ;)
